When we decided to raise chickens in 2021, we knew we wanted a chicken coop and run that would be both functional and safe for our feathered friends. After researching and drawing inspiration from various online sources, we set out to build a custom chicken coop tailored to our needs. Here’s a glimpse into our process and the features of our custom coop.
We started with a detailed SketchUp plan, sketching out the dimensions and features we wanted. After gathering materials, we began construction, paying close attention to every detail to ensure safety and functionality. Our kids joined in and were a great help.
The coop took several weekends to complete, but the result was worth the effort. Seeing our chickens happily exploring their new home made all the hard work worthwhile.
- We installed an automatic feeder and waterer to ensure our chickens always have access to fresh food and water. This system reduces the need for daily maintenance, giving us more flexibility and peace of mind.
- Raising the coop off the ground helps deter ground predators like foxes. It also provides additional ventilation and keeps the interior dry during rainy weather.
- The chicken run is fully enclosed with wire mesh on all sides, including the top. This prevents aerial predators like hawks from swooping in and ensures our chickens can roam safely.
- All doors and access points are equipped with latches to prevent unwanted entry.
